Five years after this first ever Tweet the world has changed

Twitter has changed the world

“Just setting up my twttr” That was the first ever Tweet, posted by Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, back in 2006.

Twitter – originally launched as Twttr, because the domain was owned by a bird enthusiast – is now five years old. And how many five-year-olds can claim to have changed the world?

Since then, Twitter’s growth has been astonishing, with 200, million registered users and 350 billion Tweets now handled daily.

Twitter is no longer just a way of communicating everyday stuff (“just cooking dinner”). It’s become a powerful tool for celebrities, politicians and business owners. It’s even credited with facilitating political revolution. Now that’s world-changing.

To celebrate Twitter’s fifth birthday, Mashable has created a brilliant Infographic, which you can see here.

And now, I really am off to cook the dinner!
