Grandparents get to grips with social media
It was Bernard Baruch, the great American financier and statesman, who said: ” To me, old age is always fifteen years older than I am.” I just love that attitude to life! But lately, there have been some more encouraging developments to make old age seem so much further away.
A recent study by the website MyVoucherCodes revealed that 22% of all grandparents are now using a social network.
The study, which collected results from 1,341 grandparents from the UK, discovered that 71% of grandparents who use a social network use Facebook, 34% are on Twitter and 9% use the business social network LinkedIn.
And they’re quite active users as well: 51% say they log in once a week or more, and 35% log in a few times every month.
68% said they’d joined their chosen social network in the past year. A quarter said they had joined a social network to find old friends, 20% said they did it to keep in touch with friends and family, and half were encouraged to do so by younger people in their families.
Mind you, sometimes older users could do with a little help. If you haven’t seen this week’s hot You Tube video, it’s a real treat. Bruce Huffman, 86, and his wife, Esther, 79, recently purchased their first laptop computer with a built-in webcam. While trying to get it set up, the couple sat down together and attempted to make a homemade video – something their granddaughter had tried to teach Esther a few days earlier. But neither of them knew it was actually recording!
The sweet video, which has already had over six million views on YouTube, shows Bruce imitating a monkey, checking out the wrinkles on his face and at one point even getting a bit saucy with his wife!
So, whoever you’re targeting your messages at, social media is a great way to reach them!
Now I’ll have to go. My mother’s just updated her Facebook status!
